5 Tips for Moving with Pets

Moving isn’t just exciting/stressful for us adults but it is for your pets too! Pets can sense that change is coming and this is challenging for them. They need comfort more than ever during this transition, so here are 5 tips that can help.

Bring things that smell like home

Pack their toys and bedding in a place where you can unpack it right away in the new house. This will help them adjust quickly to the smells and make them feel comfortable with their belongings in the new place. Set up their own spot in the house with all their things so they can call it theirs too. For cats make sure the little box is somewhere that they can find quickly.

Let them adjust

For dogs it’s helpful to let them explore the space right away so they can get used to all the new smells. If they are markets, make sure you keep an eye on them while doing this because they will want to cover up the old smells with their own. For cats make sure they know where the litter box is but also let them roam around and explore! They sell calming wall plug-ins at pet stores that you can plug in to help the cats relax when coming into a new space.

Explore your new neighborbood

Take your dog on a walk and let them smell all the new scents! They’re just as excited as you to get acclimated into the new area so find a dog park or just simply take them on a neighborhood walk. For cats if they’re outdoors only, make sure they’re familiar with their surroundings before letting them spend all their time outside. You want to be sure they’ll be able to find their way back.

Meet your new vet

If you’re moving to a new city you’ll want to set up a time to meet with your new vet to get your pet and doctor well acquainted. If you’re not moving to a new city, make sure you know your new route to the vet if an emergency comes up!

Give them lots of love

This is an important time for your pets too. While it may take some time and they might test your patience, make sure to give them lots of love and attention to make sure they’re feeling right at home.
