5 Ways to Volunteer During Thanksgiving

While it’s great to volunteer throughout the entire year, Thanksgiving and the holidays are always a great time to give back to the community and to those who aren’t as fortunate. Every community has their own support groups, food drives, organizations etc. A great way to find out more information is to ask your local Facebook groups or search online! Here are 5 ways your community might be contributing during these holiday times.

Food Banks

Almost every county has a local food bank where you can go and volunteer during the holidays. They provide a variety of volunteer tasks from food sorting and delivery to office support, and facility maintenance. Their goal is to eliminate hunger within the community and provide a way to enjoy a hot meal for those who aren’t able. Families and groups large and small can help support either during the week or on weekends. If you’re in the Olympia or South Sound Region – Thurston County Food Bank is where you can volunteer.

Family Support Centers

These support centers work hard to end family homelessness, poverty, and family violence. Their programs are beneficial to the community and volunteers help in a number of ways to work together and provide families with the support they need. Thanksgiving is a crucial time for family so these support centers appreciate all the help they can receive to make sure these people are feeling loved by the community. If you’re in the Olympia/South sound area: Family Support Center of South Sound is who you can contact if interested.

Big Brothers & Big Sisters

These organizations work hard to help children succeed and be supported through their lives. Volunteers work directly with children through one-on-one mentoring, relationship building, and to ultimately change their lives for the better during these crucial times in development. If you’re in the Olympia or South Sound area, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southwest Washington is who to contact.

Union Gospel Mission

This organization works with the homeless and needy through street ministry outreach. Food and hot drinks are provided in a loving and caring environment. If you’re in the Olympia/South Sound Area – Olympia Union Gospel Mission.

SafePlace

SafePlace is an organization that fights for societal change to prevent sexual and domestic violence. They offer crisis intervention, education, and long-term support. They are always seeking volunteers to help them fight to end violence in the community. More information here.
