Giving Tuesday — from Mel & Zack Durham @ eXp Realty

Updated: 10 hours ago

As we head into the season of giving and gratitude, we — Mel and Zack Durham — want to take a moment to reflect on the power of community and compassion. At eXp Realty, we believe that home is more than a structure — it’s the people, the care, and the support behind it. This Giving Tuesday, we encourage our friends, neighbors, and clients — especially those with ties to Olympia and the South Puget Sound — to consider giving back in a meaningful way. Below are a few organizations doing meaningful work right in our community, along with why their mission matters.

Where to Donate in Olympia (and Why It Makes a Difference)

Thurston County Food Bank

The Thurston County Food Bank works tirelessly to ensure that individuals and families in need have access to nutritious food. They operate multiple pantry locations throughout Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater, and provide fresh produce, dairy, frozen meat, and more. (Thurston County Food Bank) Why it matters: Food insecurity affects people from all walks of life — from working families to seniors and those facing hard times. A donation to the Food Bank can directly help families put meals on the table, reduce hunger, and relieve some of the daily stress that comes from food scarcity.

SafePlace (Olympia)

SafePlace offers support to survivors of domestic violence, abuse, and individuals in crisis. Their wish list often includes items like gift cards, cleaning supplies, face masks, sanitizers, and individually wrapped snacks — all of which help survivors rebuild stability and dignity. (safeplaceolympia.org) Why it matters: For many individuals, especially survivors of abuse or homelessness, the holiday season can be a particularly difficult time. Contributions — whether monetary or in-kind — can provide relief, safety, and hope, and remind survivors that they are not alone.

Family Support Center of South Sound

This nonprofit provides critical resources to families and individuals in Thurston County who face hardship. They accept donations directly (including from Amazon wishlists) and help connect community members with support, especially during winter months. (fscss.org) Why it matters: Many families face unexpected challenges — from job loss to housing pressure, or caring for children and aging relatives. Supporting Family Support Center helps provide a safety net at a time of year when needs often increase.

Capitol Land Trust

Capitol Land Trust works to conserve vital natural areas, working lands, and wildlife habitat across South Puget Sound and surrounding regions. They manage public preserves and protect land from development, helping safeguard local ecosystems and ensuring future generations can enjoy natural beauty. (Wikipedia) Why it matters: Our environment — parks, forests, wildlife — is a resource and a legacy worth protecting. By supporting land conservation, you help maintain clean air and water, preserve wildlife habitat, and support outdoor spaces that bring joy and health to the community.

The Salvation Army Olympia Corps

The Salvation Army in Olympia provides a broad range of services — from shelter, meals, and emergency aid to support for children, the elderly, and those in crisis. They rely on donations (and, often, volunteer support) to keep their vital services running. (olympia.salvationarmy.org) Why it matters: Whether someone is facing homelessness, job loss, or a personal crisis, Salvation Army’s presence can make the difference between despair and hope. Especially around holidays, their work helps ensure people don’t face hardship alone.

Why Giving Local Is So Important

When you donate to a local charity — rather than a national or international organization — your contribution often goes further. Funds stay in the community, helping neighbors right here in Olympia and Thurston County. That means helping kids get food, shelters for families, resources for survivors, preserving nature, and lifting up neighbors who might just need a little extra care this season.

From our home to yours: thank you for your generosity, your kindness, and for being part of a community that cares.

Wishing you, your loved ones, and your neighbors a warm, safe, and giving season.
